The building was originally used as Assembly rooms and Council offices. It became a listed building on 7th November 1975, one hundred and thirty eight years after it was built. The Bognor Club has existed since 1871 moving to its present location in 1893 where it has been ever since.

It is thought that the club was started in 1871 by Lord Nigel Kennedy on hearing that Henry Morton Stanley had found tracks in the heart of Africa, that he believed were those of Dr David Livingstone. On hearing this, Lord Kennedy invited a number of his friends and local gentry to his house in Craigweil, Aldwick for the purpose of establishing a club in Bognor to consist of "Reading, cards and Billiard Rooms." And so the Bognor Club was born.

The main activities of the club are bridge and snooker. Non- members are always welcome for a small fee each session.
